Cottonwood poplar is one of the fastest growing trees in North America and an excellent choice for high wind areas. The name comes from the fluffy white cotton-like covering that appears when the female trees produce seeds. Unlike related species such as trembling or quaking aspen, it does not propagate through clonal colonies, but will resprout readily when cut down.

Although pyramidal in youth, this treeย will have a broad vase with open branches with age. Due to the flat stem of the leaf, the leaf has the tendency to shake creating a shimmering effect from even the slightest breeze.

Plant in full sun with moist, well-drained sandy loam or silt loam soils. It tolerates a wide range of soil pH, from 4.5 to 8.0,ย and can withstand occasional flooding.ย This treeย is resistant to erosion.

Historically, their presence was used as an indicator for water. When they are not surrounded by other trees or buildings, they are often spread out as wide as they are tall. They are extremely intolerant of shade, requiring as much full sun as possible to grow and thrive. They are said to be one of the most shade-intolerant hardwood tree species.

Seedling size is approximately 12โ€ tall , 1 year old.
