Known as Malus bacatta, this hardy long time favourite has many ornamental attributes. From the showy pink and white clusters of flowers in the spring to the red jewel like pomes in the fall, it’s sure to please!Their fruit is used for excellent jams and jellies, and have been traditionally used in ciders. It is best harvested after a light frost, which makes the pomes sweeter.
Fruit size is usually less than 2 inches in diameter. Many types of Birds love to graze upon this tree including orioles, finches, cardinals and cedar waxwings. This tree does best in well drained, loam-type soils. Does not tolerate standing water, planting in deep shade will decrease flowers and fruit and promote potential disease.Seedling size is approximately 12” tall , 1 year old.
