Developed at the Morden Research Station, the Prairie Sky Poplar is a narrow, fast-growing columnar tree that’s disease-resistant and tolerates poor growing conditions. It’s also drought tolerant, so it’s a great choice for low-watering sites and xeriscaping.
Because of its tall, slim shape, Prairie Sky Poplar fits where wider trees can’t. It reaches about 60 feet tall but spreads only 15 to 20 feet, making it ideal for tight windbreak rows, laneways, property lines, and fast privacy screens. It also grows quickly, so you’ll get shelter and height sooner than with most trees. Better yet, it doesn’t produce any of the messy cotton fluff that other poplars drop each spring.
For the best growth, plant it in full sun. Prairie Sky is hardy to Zone 2, handles tough Prairie winters, and can live 60 years or more. Like most poplars, however, it has an aggressive root system that spreads out in search of water. For that reason, don’t plant it near outbuildings, under power lines, or near septic fields.
If you’re comparing poplars, choose Prairie Sky when space is tight. For a wider, rounder canopy, consider our Okanese or Northwest Poplar instead.
Seedling size is approximately 12″ tall, 1 year old.
