High bush cranberry is not a true cranberry, it is a member of the honeysuckle family. This native shrubs ideal soil structure includes clay, loams, and sand, but does tolerate a wide range of soil types. It produces clusters of showy white flowers in June.
Red berries in the fall and orange fall coloured leaves. It is noted for attracting wildlife, insect pollinators especially birds and butterflies which benefit from the fruit, which can remain on the branches well into mid winter.
The fruit is best enjoyed cooked. Rich in vitamin C. They are an excellent substitute for cranberries and are likewise used in preserves, jams, jellies and sauces.
